3/11/11 C'mon Spring!

Homepage: Zaguar

Fourth Of July's back at it, playing shows in Kansas City (TONIGHT, Friday, March 11th at the Beaumont Club, opening for Hugo), up on campus at the Student Union for their "Big Event" on March 31st and then - no joke! - back in KC at the Record Bar on April 1st. They've got some new hits worked up, new hair-cuts and fresh facial-hair syles and some pretty slick new black-on-black Fourth Of July t-shirts. Get there!

Congratulations to our girl Dri and her dub project Extra Classic. They're putting out a 7" for "Congo Rebel" on their own Nopal Records imprint. Release party is in Lawrence next Tuesday, the 15th, where they'll be steady-rockin' the Taproom. Daammnnnn. So jealous, Lawrence.

And then for those of you heading to SXSW, Extra Classic will be there playing the Manimal SXSW showcase at Malaia with Sister Crayon and Papercranes on Thursday, March 17th. They play at 1AM, deep in the cut.

If you're in New York, there are a handful of the White Flight "Panther/Children of the Light" 7"s for sale at Other Music. Hopefully some at Love Garden in Lawrence soon. And there are still limited copies available at the Make Mine store. I received some recently from Make Mine and they look beautiful and sound like analog ecstasy.

Other White Flight news can be best summed up by @mgmalloy on twitter: "Can we expect White Ark in 2011? feels like it's the new SMiLE..." Which would mean it's on course for 2045... : )

Say My Name is piecing together material for a follow-up to last year's ahead-of-it's-time "Say My Name EP". Thanks to everyone who copped the vinyl, a Pre Sense Form- designed 12" 45. This time around bad boy Kenneth Kupfer is handling design. Details soon.

C'mon Spring!

1/25/11 Warm Thoughts

Homepage: Zaguar, out the window in Greenpoint.

Kelly Hangauer from Fourth Of July is in a new project with Jeff Stolz from Drakkar Sauna - they're calling themselves "The Hips" and are debuting tracks off their coming cassette release on Thursday, Feb 3rd at the Taproom. Opening is brother Patrick and the electronic meditations of 1,000,000 Light Years.

Fourth Of July "Before Our Hearts Explode!" CD's are BACK IN STOCK at Love Garden in Lawrence and on the Range Life Webstore. The record is also up on this cool new site called Bandcamp.

Fourth Of July is starting to lay down tracks in Lawrence for a new EP - included will most likely be "BOHE!" b-sides "Fallin'" and "Wedding Day", along with recent show-stoppers "Fall In August" and "Eskimo Brothers". We'll keep you posted as it develops...

Distant Early Warning: Fourth Of July will be playing shows again in March - a choice line-up for Saturday, March 5th at the Jackpot with Hospital Ships and Mansion and then up on campus for the Student Union's "Big Event" on Thursday, March 31st. Details soon.

Did you catch the trailer for Neil Krug's "Children of the Light" video? It's HERE. Recipe's still getting tweaked for the Whole Enchilada, but man it's gonna be so tasty!

The UK 7" for White Flight's "Panther"/"Children of the Light" is OUT NOW on Make Mine and available at the Make Mine Big Cartel and on the Rough Trade site. Limited!

Keep up with Say My Name at the Kid's Soundcloud.

And, if you're down, let's take a moment to consider all the cool things in the works: the FOJ EP, new 1,000,000 Light Years, new Say My Name, a Hanz Bronze full-length on Radical Fortress, a terrific Extra Classic album, White Ark, new Suzannah Johannes(?), Hunters and Gatherers(?) - and hope with all our might for the best for them.

Lawrence: Don't miss the house show of the year THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, December 18th with Fourth Of July and Rooftop Vigilantes rocking the Bullhouse, 1030 Maine (across from the football stadium). All Ages! 10PM. (And for those of us not there, but longing to be, put those smartphones to use and get us some video!)

In case you missed it, Patrick put the SVHS to use for this video for "Friend of a Friend".

The White Flight UK 7" for "Panther"/"Children of the Light" - and Neil Krug's tripping-Hawaii video for "Children of the Light" - are due any day. Tomorrow?

This will probably be our last week for "Favorite Songs of 2010" posts, so I hope you've enjoyed them. There is still time to send in a Fav, just try to make it snappy! Send to zach@rangeliferecords and we'll get it up. You can follow the action at the blog Before Our Hearts Explode!

To family, friends, fans everywhere: Thanks for making 2010 such a wonderful year for Range Life. Say My Name, Fourth Of July and White Flight all put out incredible music. And though this is a shipwrecked industry with more obstacles than the American Gladiators set, together we managed to make something wonderful. Thank you sincerely for that.

Happy Holidays from Range Life Records XXOO

Video: Patrick Hangauer hit the vaults for his flashback/flashforward take on Fourth Of July's "Friend of a Friend", starring he and Brendan as kids. Who knew they wrote that song in the late 80's? And were such pioneering choreographers? It's all HERE for your Black Friday viewing pleasure...

Thanks to everyone who has picked up the new Fourth Of July album "Before Our Hearts Explode!" on iTunes, vinyl and CD. The CD's are SOLD OUT for now. We'll hopefully have more soon. Vinyl is available but is Limited and can be purchased at Love Garden in Lawrence or from the Range Life Webstore for $15 (domestic postage included). The LP includes a full-page lyric insert, so you can be sure to win any argument about what's being sung. Shows? Something's brewing for Dec 18th in Lawrence - details soon.

Say My Name - whose vinyl is also available at Love Garden and the Webstore - has been dropping new and non-EP tracks on his Soundcloud the last few months. His latest, "La Cygne", is one of my favorite things he's ever done - an ear candle of crackling digital fuzz that melts away the wax until you're listening to sub-layers and shadow-layers, each bob of your head and tap of your toe on some telepathic connection to the sonic space. Or maybe I've just had it on "Repeat" too long. At any rate, if you get a chance to not listen to Kanye in the next week or two, "La Cygne's" a "10", straight up.

Don't know about you, but I'm ready for "Favorite Songs 2010", our yearly attempt to put in to words those swirls of thoughts and feelings that some songs magically bring to life. We post on the blog "Before Our Hearts Explode!" (no relation to the Fourth Of July record, other than a shared sentiment). If you missed it last year, we shouted out songs (and posted links) from Pink Priest, Sleigh Bells, Bill Callahan, Bat For Lashes, Marmoset, Lee Fields, Gold Panda/Teengirl Fantasy, Wavves, Simon Joyner, Rainbow Bridge, Charles Spearin, Cursive, Polvo, Dirty Projectors, Girls/Woolfy/May Ling/Sebastien Tellier/Memory Tapes/Mungolian Jet Set/Oneohtrix Point Never/diskJokke/Shit Robot/Higamos Higomos, Magnolia Electric Co., Salem, Washed Out/Grizzly Bear/Bowerbirds/Black Moth Super Rainbow/The xx/Neon Indian/Bibio, and Bird Names.

If you care to join in the "Favorite Songs of 2010" shebang, posting will begin on Monday, November 29th and go weekdaily until we're exhausted. If there's a song you'd like to make it rain on, please type it up, include a song link and send it to Don't be shy!

9/15/10 Children of the Light

Homepage: Zaguar. White Flight "Children of the Light" album cover by Pre Sense Form.

The second single in our White Ark Singles series is "Children of the Light" and it's Out Now b/w "Thunder Over Thunder" on iTunes, emusic, and Amazon. Such a jam. Is there anyone else making music like this??? It's like something you'd hear at a bumping nightclub on the top of one of those Rainforest canopy walks: sky of stars above, wild jungle below. Uh, wanna dance?

Neil Krug's video for "Children of the Light" is imminent and unlike anything you've ever seen. Patience!

Make Mine in the UK is doing a 7" pressing of "Panther" b/w "Children of the Light" -- gonna be a Hot Item. Comes out Oct 25th. You can Pre-order it from the Rough Trade shop HERE.

Thanks to everyone who has pre-ordered the Fourth Of July LP -- it's on it's way. Thanks for your patience.

The two Brendan's from Fourth Of July are recording some intimate versions of new songs up at KJHK today for the Ad Astra Radio show airing tomorrow (Thurs, Sept 16th) at 7PM Central. The tune-in link is HERE.

And then the full Fourth Of July return home to the Taproom this Friday night, Sept 17th. 10 PM. They're playing with a stripped-down version of Arthur Dodge and the Horsefeathers called Arthur, Matt and Dave. Classic.

A kinda dark, entrancing new Say My Name track HERE - it's like walking through a Turkish bazaar in syzurpy slow-motion. Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk has a pretty awesome new song out (and a new album coming out on Fire Talk). And the new Hanz Bronze stuff is one-of-a-kind wonderful.

I did a video for Star Slinger's "May I Walk With You?" which you can see HERE.

9/6/10 Up for air

Thanks to everyone who came out to the "Before Our Hearts Explode!" release shows, bought the CD and t-shirts and pre-ordered the vinyl. I hope you'll agree this record's pretty special. It's the culmination of so many things: a relationship, a recording and mixing marathon, a phase in Lawrence that shook things up with Dri moving to SF and Say My Name leaving the band to work on his music. It's hard-won, this record, and it feels freeing to finally share it.

I Heart Local Music had a nice recap of the Lawrence release show, with video of each act, on And reviews are out on the Fire Note, Atlas and the Anchor, Dots and Dashes and Ink KC.

What next? Patrick's blast-from-the- past music video for "Friend of a Friend" and another Fourth Of July show, Friday Sept 17th at the Taproom. That and the eagerly-awaited arrival of the vinyl...

CD's are up on the Webstore and more t-shirts will be up soon.

We're trying to catch our breath real quick before the release next week of the next White Flight single, a banger called "Children of the Light". It will be up on iTunes with a b-side "Thunder Over Thunder" on Tuesday, the 14th. Make Mine in the UK is doing a "Panther"/"Children of the Light" 7 inch set for late October. And Neil Krug is finishing up an incredible video for "Children of the Light" shot on location with White Flight in Kauai.

Yeah. Stay tuned.

Surfing right through the Summer... B)

I know the trend is to rush a record out before the release date, but we actually genuinely needed another week to get things done, so we've pushed the release date for Fourth Of July's "Before Our Hearts Explode!" to August 31st.

In the meantime, "Friend of a Friend" and "L Train" you can hear HERE; "Moving On" is on MySpace; and "Crying Shame" is up on Fuck Yeah Go Team! There will be vinyl for this release - a limited pressing of 500 - Pre-Order will be up soon at the Range Life Webstore. And if you're in Kansas City or Lawrence, please join us for the "Before Our Hearts Explode!" Record Release shows, Thursday, August 26th at Crosstown Station in KC (w/ the Caves, the Dactyls and Hidden Pictures) and Friday, August 27th at the Jackpot in Lawrence (w/ Conchance and Mansion).

Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered the Say My Name EP on vinyl. It is HERE and it sounds like the future on the phono. For real. You can pick it up at Love Garden in Lawrence or through our Worldwide Webstore. If you didn't see it, this Q & A with the Wayward Blog was a nice little snapshot into the workings of Say My Name. Potholes In My Blog had a cool review. And Zaguar put together a Puerto Rico and Lawrence splicefest video for "Stop Snitching". Check it!

September 14th is the new release date for the next White Flight single, "Children of the Light". Neil Krug has a music video for it, his first for us since Dri's "Two Are One". Have you seen the stills? Can not wait!

The Range Life kickball team is in the Semifinals this Sunday (the 22nd), playing the always-tough-but-have-you-heard-of Love Garden at Holcolm Park at 5PM. No Emo Allowed. Go Team!
