A quick breather and then Dri's back on the road, hitting Fargo, Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Chicago later this week, opening for Handsome Furs. Details HERE.

Fourth Of July has a cool show coming up this weekend, opening for folk legend Michael Hurley on the patio at the Replay this Saturday evening, 6 PM.

Lot's of people asking about White Flight, so here's the truth: he's currently living in Peru, with plans to be back in October to play shows and/or record again. The record he's left us with, "White Ark", with beat production by Ratatat is terrific and we'll share it as soon as we can. The more meditative envisioning done, the better!

Anyone want to fund a music video in Peru?

Alright. Dri's West Coast dates with Conor Oberst are over. Thanks to everyone who made it out. She'll be back on the road next week opening for Handsome Furs. Check the dates HERE.

The Pitch Music Showcase takes place in Westport on Thursday. $5 gets you access to 35 bands worth of shows. Our very own Fourth Of July - nominated, along with Dri, for "Best New Act" - play at 11 PM at McCoy's, 4057 Pennsylvania.

This Friday night, 8/8/08, our friends at Chomp Womp are throwing a D.I.Y. carnival at the Bottleneck, featuring performances by Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk and Waterfowl Habitat. Details HERE. Keep an eye out for the Range Life stall where we'll either be taking polaroids with a life-sized Shaq or throwing the i Ching with Slash's Autobiography.

On the political front, it's heading towards VP time for Obama. Of the options, General Wesley Clark has the goods: progressive policies and untouchable experience. Read more and sign the petition to pick Clark HERE.

And, thanks Paris!

Tonight is the last night of Dri's tour opening for Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. They're rocking the Troubadour, 9081 Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood. Thanks to Conor and his band for taking Dri on this tour and thanks to everyone for being so supportive at these shows. I've heard nothing but good things.

For more on Dri, check her MySpace, her Splash page, her Virb, the video for "Two Are One", the Web Store and her upcoming tour dates supporting Handsome Furs.

If you're out at the Pitch Music Showcase on Thursday - which you should be - it's 35 bands for $5, all over Westport! - don't miss Fourth Of July playing at McCoy's at 11 PM.

8/1/08 Dri in San Francisco

Homepage: Zaguar.

Dri is kicking off August on a high, playing the first of two sold-out nights in San Francisco at the Bottom of the Hill, supporting Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. I remember standing outside the Bottom of the Hill for ten hours one Winter day in 1997 because Pavement was playing a rare club-date that night and there was no fucking way I was missing it. About a half hour before showtime, some Matador Records rep came out and told the thirty of us standing out there he had to catch a plane but had five tickets. I pounced, man. Got in for an indie-rocking $65.

Don't miss the hardest-working man in Lawrence show-business, DJ Josh Powers, spinning heads tomorrow night at the 8th Street Taproom. Range Life is going to be releasing Josh's solo record, which he's hard at work on, in 2017 - so watch for that!

I'm sure everyone's anxious for Headline News, so let's get to it: Wal-Mart is warning their employees not to vote for Democrats this Fall, which seems like pretty sound advice; the Feds have new powers to seize - and share the contents of - our digital devices, including laptops, when crossing American borders - Awesome!; and the Army scientist who was suspected in the post-9/11 anthrax scares has committed suicide, just as he was about to be indicted - a mere 6 1/2 years after the crimes. Glenn Greenwald, as usual, tears it apart.

And the good things: Times New Viking... Suzannah Johannes... Obama/Clark...

It's all yin and yang.

7/31/08 Dri in Bend, Oregon

Homepage: uhhhhh, Zaguar.

Dri is finishing off July (?!) with some audio fireworks tonight at the Midtown Ballroom in Bend, Oregon. Put your dancing shoes on! So far, so good on this West Coast tour supporting Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, though I haven't yet seen any show reviews or any CELL PHONE VIDEO. How is that possible since it seems like every show I go to these days everyone's taking cell phone video? What are you waiting for, kids? Celebrate your technology!

After Bend, the tour hits San Francisco, Santa Cruz and L.A. Dates HERE. And if you haven't seen it, you can watch Neil Krug's video for Dri's "Two Are One" on YouTube HERE or on Range Life HERE.

What else? I know yesterday we talked about the news. Of today's headlines, two of my favorites are "Exxon Mobil has biggest profit ever at $11.68B", which is exciting, and "Conyers wins: Federal Judge say Miers/Bolton must testify", which means that the former Bush Administration officials who were blowing off Congressional subponeas have no lawful basis to do so. So they're gonna testify now? Hell No!!! Sounds like another "Constitutional Crisis"...

But why get all serious? Just in time, JustJared.com has up pictures of Rihanna where you can see her nipple ring!

Everything's cool...

7/30/08 Dri in Seattle

Dri plays tonight at Neumos in Seattle, opening for Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. Haven't heard yet how the show went in Vancouver last night but hopefully we'll get some feedback and some pictures - maybe even some cell-phone video?? - from the shows this week and turn them around for some quick reporting.

White Flight is up, up and away... Anyone that's got any hot tips or secret codes or treasure maps for Peru, you should get in touch!

Just a quick scan of the news this morning: it looks like China is censoring the internet - despite promises not to do so - for the Olympics. Are the Olympics even gonna happen? Doesn't it seem like it's getting a little late in the Summer for the "Summer Olympics"? Where's the hype machine? Whatever happened to Dan and Dave? C'mon, Corporate America - work it! Anyway, of all people, Kansas Senator Sam Brownback is outraged that China is forcing internet-spying software on it's tourist hotels. Glenn Greenwald turns the magnifying glass on him. Keep fighting the good fight, Senator! And I hate to have to tell you, if you don't already know - but Kate Hudson and Lance Armstrong have split up. After three really terrific months of sharing themselves with each other, inspiring each other, wondering to themselves "Is this it?", they are seperating amicably and, I hope, remaining friends.

Score another one for the history books...

Dri kicks off her West Coast tour supporting Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band tonight at Richard's on Richards in Vancouver, B.C. These should be great shows! Dri's rocking the band, with Alex deLanda on bass and Ghosty's Josh Adams on drums and Jake Blanton on guitar. And then headliner Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) has a new record out and seems to be really burning with it. Dates HERE.

Also burning with it is Hanz Bronze, who has some new songs up at His Space. Download "Memorial Day Song" and "Blair" and see if your world is still on it's axis.

White Flight departs us again today, for a respite in South America. He's been working hard on his next record, "White Ark", while he's been here and we'll hopefully have details on the plans for it sometime soon. He always brings some lightning to our bottle here and I wish we could contain him but what can you do? Safe travels and splendors, White Flight!

Strange day with all these cyclical starts and finishes - Dri starting her tour, White Flight departing, Brendan getting back from New York, Josh Powers finishing his Dri remix... Whatever it is, let's make it happen.

UPDATE III: Fourth Of July play tonight (Saturday) at the Gaslight with Old Canes. Boom! And more FISA thoughts HERE and HERE.

UPDATE II: Congress passed the FISA compromise today 293 -129. Here's your CNN. Or, if you prefer, Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Congressman Moore? Voted for it, of course. Now it's off to the Senate where Barack Obama could stop it in it's tracks. MIght as well ask him to: (202) 224-2854. Will our generation take the money the way those currently in power have? Or has even "taking the money" been played-out? These... are the Days of our Lives. On a brighter note, Hunters & Gatherers plays tonight outside at the Gaslight with Drakkar Sauna. Wave your celly's in the air!

UPDATE: Yo, indie rockers - have you ever called your Congressman? I know politics can seem like an endless soap opera and it makes life easier to tune it out but occasionally issues come up that are so unjust, so deeply corrupt, that only the actions and participation of the caring public can stop our elected leaders from shamelessly selling out our rights and ideals. This FISA deal sucks. It grants President Bush increased spying powers. It guarantees AT&T and Comcast "retroactive immunity" for their role in letting the Governement data-mine from their data centers with no permission from their customers and no lawful oversight. It's a bill written and stewarded by lobbyists from the telecom companies. And it's about to get signed in to fucking law! So, if you ever did feel like letting your "Representatives" in Congress know how you felt, now would be a pretty choice time. To find a contact for your Congressman, check HERE. For those in Lawrence, Congressman Moore's office number is (202) 225-2865. If you think our future President should be weighing in on this, you can call Senator Obama's office at (202) 224-2854. Anyone who answers the phone will be nice and hear you out - it's their job. Just tell them to vote "No" on the FISA bill - and whatever else is on your mind. And then, the next time you're reading the newspaper or watching CNN and this issue comes up - whether we've succeeded or failed - you'll see how that soap opera is actually our lives, and only we can make it better. More HERE. /Zaguar

Well, that happened...

Thanks to everyone who made it to the first-ever White Flight show! For those who weren't there, White Flight split the show in to two sets. For the first one, he was seated, playing the acoustic guitar with a few other guitarists/percussionists and Quincy Quartz on drums. They played "Song for Augustine", "Pastora Divine", "Solarsphere", "Obsidian" and "Panther" kind of medley-style. Then a set change and firing up some white LED lights and incense. The second set played off pre-recorded tracks from the upcoming Fall '08 release of "White Ark". "Panther" again, "Princess Pentagon", "Black Hole", the Superargo remix of "Deathhands", "Great Gold". Onstage was a dreamscape of animal-masked figures, pulsing lights and a prowling, pink tank-topped White Flight. Offstage was Dance Party U.S.A!

Such a thrill to have White Flight back in town, doing what he does best. We're incredibly lucky here in Lawrence to be around so many extraordinary music makers, most of whom play downtown - for cheap - on a regular basis. He'll be performing songs from "White Flight" as well as from the forthcoming "White Ark". He'll be decking the walls with his recent artwork - beautiful, kaleidoscopic paintings based on sacred geometry. He'll be DJ'ing, maybe a kissing booth, the works... Mark your calenders, everybody, for "A Night with White Flight"!

For those of you in Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver and Salt Lake City, our girl Dri will be breezing through your town with her pimped-out van and her band, opening for NYC's Northern State. Anyone else been anxiously awaiting Glenn Greenwald's new book "Great American Hypocrites: Toppling the Big Myths of Republican Politics"? Man, I have. Why? "The deceitful electoral tactics and manipulative personality-based myths the Right has perfected and continuously deploys to win elections, and the ways in which our slothful, vapid and complicit establishment press propagates those myths is the principal subject of this book. And understanding and exposing that right wing/ media partnership is a necessary precondition for weakening it." Float like a butterfly,

UPDATE: Word is the Congress is going to split the FISA vote in two - one to update the law, the other to grant the telecom companies who spied illegally "retroactive immunity". For those in Kansas, Rep. Boyda has come out strongly against granting telecom immunity. See HERE. Our Lawrence Rep, Congressman Dennis Moore is so far undetermined. Call Congressman Moore's office and tell them you'd like to urge Congressman Moore to vote AGAINST any telecom immunity. It's quick, it's easy. They'll take your name and address so they can send a follow-up letter (well, that and tap your phone, right?). But this is one of those fundamental power struggles where the Corporate and Political elite are trampling rights the rest of us take for granted: the right to privacy, the right to oversight, the right to sue. If it doesn't piss you off, don't bother. If it does, call your Congressman. Dennis Moore's office number is 202-225-2865, by the way. (/Z)

And then DJ Josh Powers brings the Saturday Soul Clap dance-a-thon to the Taproom on the 8th. Nice new track, Powers!

On the political front, the majority Democrats are set to cave to the minority Republicans on granting "retroactive immunity" to the Telecom companies. Why? I'm not sure anyone knows. It makes no sense. Glenn Greenwald's flummoxed. Kargo X is shaking his head. Our government is about to wave the magic wand over definitive lawbreaking by the Bush Administration, middle-fingering the Bill Of Rights, all for what? Some cookies from the First Lady? A fruit basket? What's Indie Rock gonna do about it?

And then FISA, FISA, FISA. The Democrat-led United States Senate decided it wasn't a half-bad idea to give the law-flaunting Bush Administration everything it wanted as far as increased spying power on it's citizens - including, for no justifiable reason, "retroactive immunity" to the telecom companies that agreed to break the law in the first place. When Bush/Cheney say "Jump!" and the public paying attention say "Hell No!", the Senate must think they're saying "How High?".

So now it's wrangling between the House and Senate bills - the House bill with no "retroactive immunity" (since granting that would be insane and would stop the American people from ever finding out the extent to which they've been spied on illegally, much less hold anyone accountable for anything) and tighter restrictions on the spying - versus the Senate bill which is shite. For those in Lawrence, you can reach your favorite U.S. Representative, Dennnniiiissss Moore's office at 785-842-9313 and encourage him to vote "No" on any FISA bill which includes "retroactive immunity" for the telecoms.

If none of this pisses you off, consider: the New York Times had the story on the Bush Administration using the telecom companies to illegally spy on Americans all ready to roll a few months prior to the 2004 Presidential Election - but the Bush Administration strong-armed them into holding the story until after the election. Which the Times, of course, did. And thanks!

What else? - I've been digging this song "I Just Wanna Live" by the international grapevine.

C'mon, Spring!

And if you're following political dorkscape at all, Congress is back in session and the Senate is debating the FISA bill where one side (guess which?) wants to pass a version that grants "retroactive immunity" to the telecom companies (AT&T, Verizon) that illegally spied on Americans, via wiretaps, for years - at the behest of Bush/Cheney and without court approval. The other side, being led right now by Senators Dodd from Connecticut and Feingold from Wisconsin plan to filibuster any bill that tries to get passed with the immunity grant, on the basis that it is a fucking outrage to make the unconstitutionally criminal behavior of those in power disappear with the wave of a fairy-wand. So, anyway - something to think about. To read more, check out Glenn Greenwald, Firedoglake and Open Left.

Hope everyone had a great New Year. We did it Double Trouble-style at the Taproom and then stayed up late dancing to Hanz Bronz songs. Spent New Year's Day in the reading chair finishing off the new "Slash" Autogiography - a total auspice for me. For whatever reason Slash has become a symbol of transition in my life, from first seeing him plug in his Les Paul in the "Sweet Child O' Mine" video and thinking I finally understood what "cool" was to watching his solo in the "November Rain" video a few years later and thinking I finally understood "un-cool" - for real - to moving to Los Angeles and the very first night I was there, walking down Sunset and seeing this dude in the distance wearing a leather jacket and a top hat and thinking "Oh, god... who does this guy think he is?" - and then, getting closer and forgiving him cause Oh, it was Slash. So, it feels good to kick off 2008 with my man. And read the book! It.Is.A.Trip.
